Social Media and Child Safety

2018 was the kick start year to protect kids online.

CraigsList NO more Personal Ads - Craigslist will no longer display personal ads on its website after the Senate voted on March 22nd 2018 to pass the Stop Enabling Sex Traffickers Act. The bill means websites will be held liable for hosting sex trafficking content. It will also make it easier for victims of sex trafficking and prosecutors to sue companies that fail to keep exploitative content from their websites.

The aforementioned bill, H.R.1865, entitled "Allow States and Victims to Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act of 2017” passed the Senate on March 21 and is currently awaiting President Donald Trump’s signature. Commonly referred to as FOSTA, the bill amends section 230 of the Communications Act of 1934 (which prevents platforms like Facebook from being held liable in situations of harassment, hate speech, cyberbullying, etc.), to make websites criminally liable for knowingly hosting, assisting, supporting, or facilitating sex trafficking.

Federal authorities seize Backpage.com - Craiglist rival Backpage seized by federal authorities. The online personals page has been seized by the US law enforcement April 6, 2018.

The bill came to life following insights discovered in a Senate investigation report, “Backpage.com’s Knowing Facilitation of Online Sex Trafficking” which found that the website Backpage — a similar classifieds site to Craigslist — knowingly allowed advertisements for child prostitution.

Children present unique security risks when they use a computer connected to the internet. By taking some simple steps, you can dramatically reduce the threats. The best step you can take to your kid's safe keeps them away from Social Media as long as you can.

Many people fear the day that technology will surpass our human interaction. The world will have a generation of idiots.
